What's new on Netflix in the UAE this month
Inclement weather, tightrope walking and outback zombies are our picks for a binge-worthy month of viewing…
The summer months are beginning to roll in, and that means less time spent outside and plenty of excuses to be curled up on the couch in front of the TV.
Streaming service Netflix is the ultimate go-to for a binge-worthy unwind, and we’ve cherry-picked the best movies, TV shows and documentaries to check out in May.
So heat up some popcorn, dim the lights and get stuck in to one of these…
The Rain – May 4
Scandinavia gets its fair share of rainfall, but what if instead of it being just a minor annoyance, the rain carried a deadly virus that wiped out half of the population of Denmark? That’s the premise of this new Netflix original that follow two siblings who attempt to survive in this harsh new environment. The trailer looks appropriately gloomy, dripping in that trademark Scandi-Noir that we can’t get enough of.
My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman: Tina Fey – May 4
David Letterman’s monthly talkshow experiment has gone from strength to strength, with a fantastic lineup of so far including Jay-Z, Malala Yousafzai and former US President Barack Obama. His latest guest is none-other than 30 Rock star and comedian, Tina Fey who, going by this trailer, is as hilarious as ever, even trading barbs with Letterman in an off-the-cuff improv scene.
Hari Kondabolu: Warn Your Relatives – May 8
Making waves in 2017 with his biting documentary The Problem With Apu, US stand-up comedian Hari Kondabolu tackled the stickier side of racial politics in television. This month he makes his Netflix debut bringing his trademark brand of self-deprecating humour, touching upon hilarious celebrity encounters and an unusual obsession with mangos.
The Walk – May 11
If you missed The Walk in cinemas when it first debuted in 2015, then you’ll not want to sleep on it this time around. A griping retelling of the true story of Philippe Petit (played by the excellent Joseph Gordon Levitt), who made a death-defying, unsanctioned high-wire walk between the Twin Towers in 1972. This is nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat viewing.
Cargo – May 18
Netflix’s feature film output has been a bit hit or miss (we’re looking at you, Bright), and we’re possibly at the point of reaching zombie movie fatigue. Yet despite all that, Cargo, which features an embattled Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) fighting to find shelter for himself and his daughter in a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested Australian outback looks pretty promising indeed.
Unbreakable: Kimmy Schmidt (Season 4) – May 30
One of Netflix’s most charming and funny shows returns for its fourth season later this month. The first six episodes are set to drop on May 30, with the remaining batch scheduled for later in the year. It’s an odd choice for Netflix that typically releases everything in one go, but either way you can expect Kimmy, Titus and the gang to bring the quirk-filled hilarity.
