It’s win-win for both motorists and pedestrians…

Crossing roads in Dubai can be a perilous activity, but a new system of smart signals is set to make things better for everyone.

The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has installed the new signals at 15 locations across the city, following a successful trial on Al Saada Street in DIFC.

What makes them smart? Well, the signals use a sensor-based ground system which can tell when pedestrians are waiting to cross and automatically readjust the signal time remaining, instead of the pre-timed traffic lights which are currently in use.

The aim is to reduce the amount of time pedestrians have to wait to cross the road, while also keeping traffic flowing smoothly.

The smart signals have been installed at Al Muraqqabat, Al Rigga, Al Mankhoul, Baniyas, 2nd of December Street, Al Maktoum and Sheikh Khalifa Streets, as well as in the Al Barsha and City Walk districts.
