FEWA confirms that there will be no new fines for late bill payments
But a Dhs100 fee now automatically applies if you miss the payment deadline
Rumours have been circulating online regarding a new Dhs100 fine that residents will be subject to should they fall late on paying their monthly electricity and water bill.
Naturally, this has got people in a bit of a tizzy, so much so that the Federal Electricity and Water Authority (FEWA) has come forward to officially clarify things.
In a statement posted to their social media accounts, Mohammed Saleh, Director General of FEWA, confirmed that the Dhs100 fine is nothing new and is actually a reconnection fee that is charged only when a customer’s service becomes terminated if they are in arrears for over 20 days.

He goes on to explain that this fee has now been reclassified, and that from now on customers can expect to receive an SMS from FEWA 20 days after the initial due date of their bill, reminding them to make payment.
Customers are then granted an additional 4 days grace (so 24 in total) from the receipt of this SMS to make good on payment, otherwise a Dhs100 charge will be added to their account, rather than having their service suspended.
