A massive meteor shower is expected to light up the skies this weekend
And yes, this time it’s the real deal…
Remember last month and all the fervour of the is it/isn’t it meteor that disappointingly turned out to just be space junk?
Well, fret not crestfallen UAE stargazers because this weekend you will be redeemed with a chance to watch celestial space rocks hurtle through the sky at blinding speed. And yes, this time it’s the real deal.
The annual Leonid meteor shower is a phenomenon that is believed to originate from the Leo constellation. It has resulted in some mighty impressive displays in the past, with meteors falling at rates of up to 50,000 per hour.
This year’s display will take place over the whole weekend, with the expected hourly peak of 10 to 20 meteors hitting in the evening of Friday 17 November.
While the meteor shower will be visible to the naked eye, you will need to head out reach of Dubai’s bright lights in order to see it. Thankfully, for those hoping to capture a glimpse, The Dubai Astronomy Group will be holding a special public event from Friday evening until early Saturday morning. You can visit their website to register your interest.
Here’s a little taste of what to expect (albeit sped up for maximum dramatic effect):
