More than 1,800 people fined for littering in Dubai this year
There are rubbish bins everywhere, use them…
The Dubai Municipality has said that they have fined 1,800 people for littering in public places in 2017 so far, and they also fined 500 residents for spitting on public roads (gross).
The offending litterers were caught doing so both on foot and from cars according to the Khaleej Times (there’s nothing more infuriating than seeing stuff being chucked nonchalantly out of a car window).
How much do you get fined if you’re caught littering? Well, disposing of waste or cigarette butts on the road, in the streets or in the parks of Dubai incurs a fine of Dhs500.
Basically, don’t do it.

If you chuck a fast food packet out of your car window and think you haven’t been caught because you’ve not been pulled over, think again – the Municipality actually have officials that have a “certified electronic system” that can take photos of motorists who litter. The Dhs500 fine will then be connected to their car soon after they’re snapped.
But, as the Municipality points out, swerving a fine isn’t the only reason you should chuck your trash around:
“More than just for avoiding fines, people should ensure the environment is clean and teach their children the same to avoid harming both animals and sea creatures,”Abdulmajeed Abdulaziz Saifaie, Director of the Waste Management Department at Dubai Municipality, told the Khaleej Times.
Hear hear! Dubai Municipality’s amazing team of orange-jumpsuit-wearing cleaners do keep the litter under control across Dubai, but they shouldn’t have to.
Meanwhile, you can be fined Dhs1,000 for disposing of waste by burning it (in an unauthorised manner).
