Do you catch the metro to Ibn Battuta Mall for your weekend shop? Read on…

Dubai Metro’s red line between Jumeirah Lakes Towers station and Ibn Battuta station will be closed during the weekend for 10 weeks.

According to the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the disruption is due to constructional changes that will see the red line extended to the site of Dubai World Expo 2020.

The section will be closed on Fridays and Saturdays from July 28 to October 14.

Don’t worry though – there will be an alternative transport option. Metro riders will be offered a free shuttle bus between the two stations.

This means you can hop off the metro at JLT, get on a bus and be ferried to Ibn Battuta, where you can jump back on the metro and continue in the direction of UAE Exchange (or stay and shop at Ibn Battuta Mall, the world’s largest themed shopping mall).

There will also be a shuttle bus running in the opposite direction.

The changes to the Dubai Metro fall under the Route 2020 project, which involves extending the red line for 15km from Nakheel Harbour and Tower station, adding 11.8km of viaduct and 3.2km of underground tracks..

The new route is scheduled to open on May 20, 2020, and is expected to ferry up to 46,000 riders an hour in both directions.
