The Burj Khalifa lights up for Egypt
Nearly half a million Egyptians call the UAE home, and Dubai sent a clear message of support to them last night…
Dubai sent out a message of support to the religious minority Christians in Egypt, as well as the nearly 500,000 Egyptians who live in the UAE last night. The city shined the Eagle of Saladin and the Egyptian flag on its largest landmark, the Burj Khalifa.
The Saturday night message comes after a senseless attack by ISIS on Friday, in which 29 people were tragically killed. The victims were Coptic Christians on their way to a monastery south of Cairo and near the city of Minya. Another 20 people are still critically injured.
Last week it was the Union Jack on the Burj Khalifa after the horrific concert attack in Manchester, and this week it’s the Egyptian flag after an awful attack a day before Ramadan.
“The icon spreads the message of peace and harmony to the world during this spiritual month of Ramadan,” said the Burj Khalifa’s official Instagram account.
The UAE has been strong about its stance on religious tolerance, with a Minister of Tolerance appointed last year. And, just last week H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, gave the Arab Hope Maker award to a Coptic Christian woman called Mama Maggie, who is often referred to as the Mother Theresa of Cairo. Sheikh Mohammed personally gave the woman who helps the children of Cairo’s garbage slums Dhs1 million so that she can keep doing her good work.

And last year, Sheikh Mohammed spoke of the UAE’s love for Egypt at the World Government Summit: “The UAE and its people love Egypt and Egyptians. They were our teachers when we were young. I want to remind you that the UAE stood with Egypt when Arab leaders refused to let it be part of the Arab League. I was present when Sheikh Zayed insisted that Egypt should return to the Arab League as it is the spirit of the Arab World.”
