It’s hoped better understanding of the rules will lead to safer roads.

Foreign language speakers in Dubai will soon be able to take the theory section of their driving test with the help of a translator via Skype.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has signed an agreement with the Dubai-based Kreative Company, which offers communication and translation services.

The company will facilitate instant remote translations of driving theory tests in 198 foreign languages.

How will it work? Well, anyone who wants to take the test in their native tongue (aka not English or Arabic) will have to submit an application seven days in advance, so an interpreter can be sourced from anywhere in the world.

It also sounds like there will be an additional fee for the service.

When the applicant rocks up to take the test, they will interact with the interpreter via Skype so the questions can be translated into their language.

The translation service will be available at all RTA and RTA-supervised driving centres, and will be recorded and monitored to make sure it’s not manipulated or abused.

“The system enables examinees to clearly understand the rules of driving and traffic in the language of their choice,” said Ahmad Hashim Behroozian, CEO of RTA’s licensing agency.

“Better understanding of rules and regulations would eventually enhance road safety.”
