Our top pick of the movies out in cinemas this week is Pete’s Dragon, a Disney remake of a beloved 1977 animation.

Pete’s Dragon

The latest from Disney is a remake of a 1977 cartoon, with a stellar cast, dreamy scenery and a big green hero that you’re going to want to take home. Pete is a little boy who’s been living in the wilderness since the death of his parents, with only his dragon pal Elliot for company. When Pete is found by the well-meaning Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) and her fiancé Jack (Wes Bentley), they assume from his descriptions that the dragon is imaginary. When it turns out to be very, very real, they end up having to protect the gentle giant from Jack’s greedy brother (Karl Urban) who wants to capture him.

Sully 

Remember that pilot who landed a plane on the Hudson River? That was Chesley Sullenberger or ‘Sully’, who’s played by Tom Hanks in this film about the ‘Miracle on the Hudson’. As Sully informs us, the landing was something that no pilot has ever been trained for: an emergency landing after losing both engines at 2,800 feet – and yet he managed to save all 155 crew and passengers on board. The film, directed by Clint Eastwood and also starring Laura Linney and Aaron Eckhardt, tells us what happened in the aftermath, when (shockingly) not everyone saw Sulley as a hero

Ben-Hur 

It’s been 57 years since the legendary film Ben-Hur came out, so apparently Hollywood thought it was time for another. In case you’re not familiar, this is the story of Ben-Hur (Jack Huston) who is betrayed by his best friend Messala (Toby Kebbell) and, despite being presumed dead, returns to wreak revenge in the Roman arena. So it’s a bit like Gladiator. Worth watching purely to see Ben-Hur mentored by Morgan Freeman sporting some impressive dreadlocks, this remake doesn’t live up to the original but is decent popcorn fare.

Bilal: A New Breed of Hero

This one is a must-see, purely because it’s the first ever UAE-produced animated film (it was done by Dubai production company Barajoun Entertainment). You may have caught it at last year’s Dubai International Film Festival. It is based on true events from the life of Bilal ibn Rabah, a young boy with dreams of becoming a great warrior. Game of Thrones‘ Malko, aka Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Ian McShane star.

Baa Baa Dekho (Hindi)

If you like your love stories told in a slightly confusing, time shifting manner (think 500 Days of Summer, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, About Time), you’ll love this sweet Bollywood movie. Baar Baar Dekho follows the story of the loving couple Jai (Sidharth Malhotra) and Diya (Katrina Kaif). After an argument around their wedding day, Jai is granted the ability to travel forward and backward in time, and see how their life together could and would have turned out.

Ashan Khargeen (Arabic)

A slapstick comedy about a somewhat mis-matched couple: the social butterfly Leila and the commitment phobic Ramzi. Similar to the rom com Date Night, which starred Tina Fey and Steve Carrell as a married couple who get mixed up with some unsavory characters, Leila and Ramzi end up being pursued by local gangsters when they find themselves in possession of a suitcase full of cash.
