In pics: A glimpse at teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi mega project

A phenomenon in the making…

Set for completion in 2024, teamLab Phenomena is a collaborative effort between DCT Abu Dhabi, Miral and teamLab — and the result, as you can see from the renders, looks set to be an engineering masterpiece.

It’s currently under construction in the hive of megaproject activity that is, Saadiyat Cultural District.

The architectural marvel represented by the building is more than skin deep. The futuristic looking space will stretch across a 17,000 sqm gallery area and is billed to become the ‘home of infinite curiosity’.

But what does that actually mean?

It’s a pretty cool concept, the collections within will be curated around a theme of ‘environmental phenomena’ and ‘offering new perspectives on the world’. The true genius here though is that the exhibits will be shaped by the changing environment, and like their organic inspiration, grow and evolve mimicing the subject matter.

Each piece will be designed to respond to its specific local environment within the teamLab Phenomena building, and the interactions it encounters. This constantly changing virtual world means that every visit, by every guest will yield a different experience.

But with the 2024 opening still a little way off, His Excellency Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, Chairman of the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) made the trip to Japan, to see what the future tech ‘team’ have been up to in the ‘lab’.

The Chairman’s tour itinerary included a stop at the teamLab Planets museum in Tokyo; teamLab’s stunning outdoor museum in an ancient forest in Kyushu and of course the teamLab development studios in Tokyo, Japan.

Commenting on the visit, HE Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak said: “Sitting at the intersection of art, technology, nature, and high-tech fantasy, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will offer a world of limitless wonder and creativity. We look beyond ‘impossible’ to expand our horizons and push boundaries to better connect with each other.

“We are committed to inspiring a new generation of innovators in Abu Dhabi and the world, in addition to creating cultural experiences and narrating our stories, similarities, and differences – we believe in the diversity of our artistic expression,” he added.

Of course, teamLab Phenomena isn’t the only ground-breaking cultural attraction being pieced together on this desert island.
