If you think you just might be the next Quentin Tarantino, or maybe even the next Michael Bay, but you’ve never had a chance to get behind the camera, read on. Dubai International Film Festival has just launched The Reel Dubai, a competition that gives the winners the opportunity to make a film that shows off what they consider the real side of Dubai.

All you need to do is think up an idea for a short film about the city, which can be anything you want – fiction, a documentary, a cartoon – so let your imagination run wild, and then submit a synopsis of it online.

The competition, in conjunction with Samsung and Dubai Tourism, should “reflect the ambitions for the #MyDubai initiative”, say organisers, who called for aspiring filmmakers to “show that beyond the landmarks, headlines and urban and technological advancements for which Dubai is known, there is a thriving, exciting and diverse city which more than two million people call home”.

Six contestants will be chosen to actually make their film, with help from local filmmakers, including Ali Mostafa, director of City Of Life. The filmmakers will mentor the contestants through the whole process, and each film will be made on a Samsung Galaxy Note 4. The six films will be shown together in March, when the overall winner will be revealed. The lucky winner will win a trip to the Cannes Film Festival in May, where their short film will be shown.

To be in with a chance of winning, submit your idea online between January 25 and February 21 at diff.ae.
