Screens will be operating at a maximum 30 per cent capacity for the moment…

Now showing

Yesterday Abu Dhabi Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Committee signed off on the reopening of the capital’s cinemas.

They were temporarily ordered to stop operations on February 5, 2021 as part of a proactive effort to avoid extending the marginal surge in Covid 19 cases at the time.

The return of big screen action, comes with a fresh cast of operating regulations to ensure public safety remains the central concern.

Leading that cast, is a requirement for theatres to cap the maximum screen occupancy at 30 per cent of a full house.

Cinemas have also been given renewed instructions on adherence of using face masks, maintaining physical distance, and of course regular deep sanitising.

New this week on the big screen:

The Owners

Based on a hugely popular graphic novel, the film begins with a group of friends thinking they’ve found an easy score at an empty house with a safe full of cash. The burglary becomes somewhat more complicated when the owners, an elderly couple, come home early. Despite looking like fairly typical senior citizens, it becomes clear that the thieves have managed to pick a pair of deeply psychotic pensioners to mess with.

Behind You

If you’re the type of person that runs to the bathroom at night closing your eyes so your flatshare demon doesn’t catch you, you might want to avoid this one.  Two young sisters find that all the mirrors in their estranged aunt’s house are covered or hidden. Leave them covered right? They’re clearly obscured for a purpose. That’s not what happens in the movie, of course, curiosity leads one of the girls to a mirror in the basement and now we can’t sleep without lights on.

Starring: Addy Miller, Elizabeth Birkner, Jan Broberg

Raya & The Last Dragon

Disney’s latest animated peril quest is set in the fictional world of Kumandra, an enchanting land that suddenly comes down with a nasty infestation of mysterious creaturs, called the Druun.  The good news is Kumandra has long been a roosting spot for dragons, the bad news — the dragons were pushed to extinction saving humans the last time the Druun were on the scene. So it’s up to lone warrior Raya, to get all Daenerys Stormborn, track down the fabled ‘last dragon’ and open up a can of dracarys on the Druun.

Coming soon…?

Last week we reported on the news that some cinemas in Abu Dhabi could be serving adult beverages in their premium, restaurant service seating.

The news came from a Department of Culture and Tourism — Abu Dhabi (DCT) circular, but as yet we have had no official confirmation from the DCT or cinema chains as to whether licenses have or will be granted.
