Plastic bottles to be banned from restaurants in this Dubai community
It’s another step in the right direction…
Dubai Sustainable City is set to ban the sale of plastic bottles across its restaurants and coffee shops. The move is one of a number of new strategies being implemented by the community to reduce the use of single-use plastic by 90 per cent in 2020.
All six restaurants will be required to offer filtered water to guests for free, and remove bottled water from their menus. Water fountains will also be set up around The Sustainable City in the gym and common areas of the community.
As well as bottled water, the phase-out plan will target plastic bags, straws, balloons, cutlery and food packaging.
While plastic is integral to lives, people often tend to forget that plastic pollution is also one of the most damaging to our ecosystem,” explained Faris Saeed, CEO of Diamond Developers, the developer behind the neighbourhood. “The Sustainable City’s goal to reduce single-use plastic consumption by 90 percent by 2020 underlines our commitment to promoting a sustainable environment and reducing our ecological footprint to secure a greener and cleaner nature for future generations.”
Sustainable City plans to reduce the use of single use plastic by 50 per cent by September 1, and then 90 per cent by January 1, 2020.
“By involving all our community members, this initiative supports the global efforts to combat climate change, the green vision of the UAE, and the Dubai Plan 2021, and will help avoid plastic waste pollution by inspiring behavioural change,” he added.
