KhalifaSat was successfully launched into space on Monday morning.

We’ve seen the Burj Khalifa light up in some pretty amazing ways during its time – with national flags, scoreboards, and even K-pop performances – but this might just be the coolest display yet.

Shortly after 8am on Monday morning (UAE time), the first satellite built entirely by Emirati engineers, KhalifaSat, was successfully launched into space from the Tanegashima Space Centre in Japan.

To celebrate the milestone, last night the Burj Khalifa lit up with a countdown, before showing an enormous rocket which “took off” up the length of the 828-metre icon.

Awesome, right? The Burj Khalifa also displayed the message: “100% Emirati-developed satellite, from space to serve Earth.”

KhalifaSat, which has been in development since 2013, was designed, tested, built and managed by Emirati engineers at the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre’s Advanced Technology Laboratories, making it the first space machine to be developed in the facility.

KhalifaSat will join the UAE’s two imaging satellites that are already in orbit, DubaiSat-1 and DubaiSat-2. It will beam high-resolution images of Earth which will be used for urban planning, monitoring environmental change, disaster relief and more.
