A familiar name that’s on a mission to beat the heat.

At this time of year, when you practically require a snorkel to cope with Dubai’s soaring humidity levels, alfresco drinking might be the last activity you’d want to partake in. That was a big problem for Girders Garden in the JA Ocean View Hotel, which used to have to close for the hot months.

Not anymore, though – the previously outdoor sports bar has undergone a major revamp, and now boasts crucial comforts like walls and air conditioning, while still maintaining the look and feel of a garden space. There’s a canopy-style ceiling, patio furniture, and plenty of greenery.

It’s a bit of a hidden gem – we spent 10 awkward minutes sitting in Girders, the bar downstairs, before realising we were in the wrong place. It turns out Girders Garden is a totally separate outlet.

Sports fans will be very happy with the TV situation, with one enormous screen near the entrance, and several smaller screens dotted throughout the bar. But even if you’re not so fussed about the action, we’d still recommend a visit. Why? Because the food is truly good.

The menu (which includes pork) is well thought out. As well as your standard fries and chicken wings, there’s a decent selection of salads – the fresh burrata salad (Dhs70) and the zingy quinoa salad (Dhs55) were highlights.

We were also impressed with the surprisingly moreish veggie burger (Dhs60), composed of spinach falafel, tempura kale, and a tomato bun, paired with sweet potato fries and tahini dip. It was a nice light alternative to your usual pub grub.

But if you are after something more meaty, the BBQ platter for 3 (Dhs250) represented excellent value, with lamb chops, chicken, Wagyu beef sliders and US prime rib-eye steak, served with fries and roast veges.

The new-look Girders Garden gets two thumbs up from us, both in terms of atmosphere and menu. We’re also hearing good things about their Garden Brunch on Fridays, which includes a “pimp your drinks” station where you can jazz up your beverage with various fruits and herbs. We do love a good garden party…
