Review: Luchador
Does this Mexican stand out from the many recently opened restaurants on The Palm?
In the world of professional wrestling, donning a colourful mask and cape is a bit of a gimmick, and while that word can sometimes carry negative connotations, in the case of Luchador – a Mexican cantina with all the accoutrement of its Lucha Libre namesake – it actually serves to enhance the experience.
Located on the 11th floor of the Aloft Hotel on Palm Jumeirah, the restaurant nails the decor, from the punchy murals and seating, to the massive wall of wrestling masks that greet you on arrival. This is all accompanied by a fantastic ocean view that only the top Palm restaurants provide.
Unlike the theme, however, Luchador’s menu is no gimmick, opting for a tasty selection that’s big on Mexican street food. We kicked things off with a generous bowl of salmon guacamole (Dhs60) – the combination of smoked fish and avocado was a definite highlight. The quality of the fish dishes persisted, with an excellent sea bas chipotle ceviche (Dhs55) that was both fresh and appropriately picante.
The main event was a selection of tacos and taquitos (Dhs15 per piece), of which we emphatically recommend both the fish and chicken options. They’re deliciously crafted and of a good enough size that you won’t feel guilty ordering a half dozen without a second thought. One thing worth mentioning is that aside from a lone quesadilla, the menu is free of other classic tortilla-wrapped fare, so those looking for a burrito will need to go elsewhere.
A shared helping of tres leches (Dhs40) for dessert combined sponge cake, fruit and merengue with a dollop of coconut ice cream that was so good we practically licked the plate trying to soak up every drop. It’s a good thing too, because the combination of affordable bites, funky surroundings and a killer view make Luchador worth a repeat visit.
