Dubai International Airport is officially the world’s busiest when it comes to international passenger traffic. However, in 2017 roughly 70 per cent of the total passengers who passed through DXB were merely transiting on their way to other destinations.

With Dubai positioning itself as a primo global tourist destination, it doesn’t take a maths genius to figure out that that equates to a lot of missed tourist opportunities. Well, it looks like that’s all about to change as the UAE Cabinet has given the go ahead for a policy to be drawn up granting temporary entry visas to passengers transiting at any of the UAE’s international airports.

The move is designed to help bolster the tourism industry and will be granted to passengers who wish to visit any of the country’s landmarks and attractions. That means you could soon nip out and snap a selfie with the Burj Khalifa on your way from Sydney to London, for example.

There has been no announcement yet on when the new policy will come into effect but the working group within the UAE Cabinet tasked with preparing the policy will be weighing up the pros and cons that granting a temporary transit via will have on the tourism sector as well as the economy in general.

The new policy will list visa fees, mechanisms for increasing the number of stop-over visitors, as well as ways to promote the country’s tourism attractions.
