New laws will make the UAE a 'role model' for gender balance
The UAE has big plans to become one of the world’s top countries for gender balance.
The UAE’s Gender Balance Council has revealed it is working on new legislation with the aim of making the UAE one of the world’s most gender-equal countries.
The announcement was made by H.H. Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the Gender Balance Council, following the council’s first official meeting of 2018.
Sheikha Manal said the efforts of the council were in line with its mandate to review and propose legislation that supports equal opportunities and narrows the gender gap across all sectors.

The council’s objective is to establish the country as a role model for gender balance legislation in the region, she said.
H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, vice president of the UAE and ruler of Dubai, has previously said he wants the UAE to become one of the world’s top countries for gender balance.
Earlier this month Sheikh Mohammed revealed the UAE had endorsed a bill which would guarantee equal pay for men and women.
“There are no exceptions in providing equal opportunities between the sexes,” he said.
“Our Constitution ensures equal rights among the sexes and we seek to enforce and guarantee this right through the new law.”
The UAE Gender Balance Council was formed in 2015, and is a federal entity that works to “enhance the role of women in all fields”.
